Lucinda Purkis is a multi-disciplinary visual artist based in London, originally from Exeter.
At the heart of their practice is a continuous drawing practice whereby they have developed habits of repetitive drawing and mark making to enable their interior world to flow out onto the page.
In this way visual languages intuitively emerge mapping personal codes, religious iconography, patterns, sequences, avatars, words and phrases and signs of the city. These characters drift between recognisable motifs and abstract emblems and simultaneously represent a deeply personal world and one that contains universal symbols open to the interpretation.
Purkis works across disciplines including textiles, digital print, screen printing and painting to transpose and make tactile their drawings and writings. Collage and patchwork is central to their practice for both its non-hierarchical and non-linear nature and its ability to express the array of overlapping references.
Human avatars recur and evolve in their work and serve as emotional embodiments hinting at mystical, fictional and biblical characters and serving at times as mythologised self portraits.
